Day 2: Judging and Block Party

Mon, 2016-05-16 21:44 -- Jessie MacAlpine

Bright and early, the finalists arrived at the exhibit hall, dressed to impress for their full day of awards judging. Following the morning of presentations, the students were delighted to have a BBQ lunch in McConnell hall and relax before the judging continued throughout the afternoon. It was a long day filled with a lot of impressive science, and the finalists left with smiles on their faces, content to be finished with the business part of the week.

The evening then ended up with a Block Party celebration at Molson Stadium. Food trucks and various inflatables and carnival games surrounded the field, where students were playing Frisbee and soccer. Delicious smells wafted across the field, including flame grilled pizza, dim sum, grilled cheese, caramel corn and baked goods. Spirits were high as finalists competed in obstacle courses with their new friends from across the country. Despite the cold weather, everyone kept warm by dancing, singing and celebrating the end of judging for CWSF 2016.

Tomorrow finalists and delegates will be off on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour of Montreal, exploring the sights, sounds and tastes of this historical and vibrant city. The weather tomorrow is a high of 14 degrees, but mostly sun and cloud so at least it should be dry. Don’t forget to bring a jacket to stay warm!

Today’s fun fact about Montreal is that it contains an “Underground City.” A series of tunnels connect Montreal for over 32km across the city-might be something fun to explore tomorrow!

Congratulations again to all of the finalists on completing their judging today. Have a fantastic night of sleep (you’ve certainly earned it!) and enjoy exploring Montreal.
