The first full day of Judging at EUCYS and visiting the Heureka science centre in Finland!
It’s now day three of EUCYS and the second day of judging. My two chaperones and I ate lunch at 7am again and then took the metro to the exhibition hall. Judging started at 9am and ended at lunch. After the lunch break, all contestants returned to their projects again for the third round of judging. In between getting judged, I had the opportunity to meet other people around my area from Egypt, Russia, and the Ukraine. I also had the chance to talk to some of their other student volunteers that were helping out with the fair. Everyone was so kind and friendly to each other which was really nice to see!
After the third round of judging finished, we all headed over to Heureka, the science centre in Finland. Before exploring the science centre for ourselves, a guest speaker working with CERN (The European Organisation for Nuclear Research) talked to us about some of the research projects they conduct there. Following this speech, we were lucky to see a fabulous show about fire. During the show, they made fire using various different methods that changed the color and shape of the flames, and also extinguished the flames in a variety of different ways. After this show, dinner was served in the Einstein Café and then we were free to wander around the science centre. Some of the coolest things featured in Heureka was a huge planetarium for watching scientific films, and an exhibit where rats played basketball. Just before leaving the science centre and heading back to the hotel for the night, my two chaperones and I each made a coin with our heads printed on the front of it. All in all it was an awesome day and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for tomorrow!
