Day 5 was a continuation of Atomic Energy for me. Today, participants split into groups to create cities out of construction paper that run on nuclear power. My group had a river running through it to supply water to the reactors. It also had a park in the middle named after Lise Meitner (the scientist who discovered nuclear fission). Read more
Today was the first day of the Atomic Energy activity for me. After some brief lectures in basic atomic theory, the other participants and I did some activities and played some games that represented challenges faced by radiation workers. For example, there was one game in which three types of balls were in a bin. Read more
On the third full day of APEC AYSF, I had the "Local Wisdom: Banana” activity. This involved splitting into small groups and building a contraption out of banana fibres that filtered sea water and oil. Originally, my group tried rotating a jar like a centrifuge so as to separate the oil and water centrifugally, but this plan didn’t turn out so well. Read more
On the second full day of the 4th APEC Youth Science Festival, Minuoja had the activity “Atomic Energy”, and I had the activity “Water Rocket”. I learned some tips on how to effectively build rockets to be stable and aerodynamic. These included having a heavy nose on the rocket so that it brings the centre of mass forward, and having fins on the back so that it will stay stable. Read more
On the first day of the 4th APEC Youth Science Festival, we attended the Opening Ceremonies. After being served some delicious refreshments, we sat down and watched a few opening lectures from prominent scientists and science educators from around the world.
