Yassine Bouanane (17) of Laval, Québec has been selected as one of 15 finalists in the second annual Google Science Fair. His project, Soleil, où es-tu? (Sun, where are you?), involved the development of a device that automatically orients solar panels perpendicular to the sun to maximise their energy output. Bouanane's device delivers 36.5% more energy than a standard solar panel under the same conditions. Read more

Four Canadian projects are among the 90 regional finalists announced today in the second annual Google Science Fair (GSF). Youth Science Canada is pleased to announce the ten recipients of its 2012 Distinguished Service Award. The Awards annually recognize up to ten volunteers and staff who have made an outstanding contribution, through innovation, long service, or leadership, to the organization or its programs at any level. Based on the success of last year’s program, Youth Science Canada is pleased to announce that the Ambassador Program will be returning for the 2012 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Charlottetown, PEI. The CWSF Ambassadors will be a group of former CWSF participants who will interact with the finalists and delegates throughout the week. On January 11, 2012, Google launched the second annual Google Science Fair. The Google Science Fair is an international competition which encourages students between the ages of 13 to 18 to be curious, ask questions, and perform science experiments to answer those questions. In partnership with CERN, National Geographic, LEGO and Scientific American, Google invites these students to post their science projects online so that they may compete for prizes, scholarships and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
